Recent Sermons

The Holy City (Audio) >           Video >

Nearly everyone is inspired by the song, "The Holy City."   It has become a classic at large religious gatherings through the past 150 years!  As the third verse builds to a creshendo we can almost picture the city of God descending upon the site of Old Jerusalem.  The Apostle John's description of the Holy City is so encouraging and inspiring it is read at many funerals as an encouragement to those who have lost a loved one.  The song says "the gates are opened wide that all who would might enter and no one is denied."  Have you ever wondered if God changes his tactics, compared to today?  Or are those gates opened wide today as well?  God teaches that all are included, even today!

Believing Thomas: God's Reality vs. Our Reality >

We often remember what Thomas said when informed by the other disciples that Jesus had appeared to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." We tend to forget Thomas' reaction when he saw Jesus one week later. Jesus appeared and said, "Peace be with you!" Thomas exclaimed, "My Lord and my God." Listen to this inspiring sermon and see how God's reality and our reality are not always the same.

The Pearl of Great Price >

What is the pearl of great price? In Jesus' parable the merchant sold all he had to buy it. This sermon sheds light on the price God paid for each of his precious children.

Throne of Grace >

We read in Hebrews 4:16 we can come boldly before the "Throne of Grace" because of what our High Priest Jesus has done for us.  Yet in the same context we read the word of God is "sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow."  Sounds like a bit of a disconnect, doesn't it?  We will learn here about the Throne of Grace, the Word of God, and our Great High Priest who is indeed able to sympathize with our weaknesses.  And we can indeed find mercy and grace at His wonderful Throne of Grace.

What Is Man? >

This question is regularly visited by pastors, teachers, poets and writers, all in search of the answer.  But the answer is found in the context of God's own identity, as he seeks to reveal himself to his creation, and express his deep love for mankind.  When we begin to grasp "Who Is God?" then we will more clearly understand the answer to the question, "What is Man?"  God pours out his love into his creation and then enters that very creation because of his intense desire to complete the creation and bring mankind into his eternal realm.

Pray, Sing, Call >

James in the final chapter of his epistle helps his readers and helps us find ways to cope with our difficulties in this life.  And we face them all!  So did the first century Christians.  Suffering is not easy, especially alone.  Jesus knows that first hand.  Prayer is a way we communicate with God and knowing he hears can help in times of difficulty.  Singing in the cheerful moments of successes can praise God for his love and mercy.  Finally, asking others to help share the burden echoes what Jesus taught about the love that would characterize his people through the ages to come.

Draw Near to God >

Many Christians find themselves drifting away from God.  Many don't feel that close to Him.  James encourages his readers to draw near to God and God will draw near to us.  The wonderful truth of the matter is God acted first.  Before we entered the picture, God already began the process of drawing near to us.  Even while we were still sinners Jesus Christ drew near to us.  Our place in the matter now is to be responsive to what has already been done by God through Jesus by the Holy Spirit.

The Royal Law >

James taught that "faith without works is dead." But he wasn’t creating a poster child for legalism. If the writer of this epistle was indeed the Lord’s brother, surely he would understand the wonderful gift of grace. The Royal Law is based upon love and grace. This same law is a "law of liberty" which will eventually bring liberty, peace, grace and love to all of mankind. God has demonstrated His love for us, and now James is encouraging us to apply that to others.

Hearers or Doers >

James gives some practical advice on living a Christian life. He encourages us to listen carefully, but not stop there. He urges all to be "doers." Salvation is a wonderful gift that cannot be earned, yet once we are connected to God through Jesus, we can be willing vessels, following the Holy Spirit’s working in our life. 1. Get rid of moral filth. 2. Accept the imbedded word. 3. Look into the spiritual mirror. 4. Keep a tight reign on our tongue. 5. Look after orphans and widows. 6. Keep unspotted from the world.

Staying or Going? >

Jesus had just finished feeding 5,000 with five loaves and two fish. Impressed by what they saw, people began to follow after Jesus. When he told them about the True Bread from heaven, many began to complain and no longer believe. Then Jesus asked the disciples if they were staying or going. They said they were staying because Jesus only has the words of eternal life.

Empowered to Live to the Fullest>

What does it mean to "be filled with the Spirit"? The filling of the Spirit empowers us to live our lives to the fullest. We receive the Holy Spirit as Christians, but how do we use it to do Gods Work?

When Jesus called us and opened our minds to understand the wonderful future he held for us, a process of change began. Paul elaborates on that change by encouraging his readers to cooperate, to be imitators of God and live in love. Since we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, we are to work in harmony with the change begun by Jesus Christ. You really are becoming "The New You."

Equipping the Saints >

Jesus started the Church with twelve men.  But he made the statement, "...the gates of Hades would not prevail against it."  He intended to remain involved with the Church throughout the ages, saying "I will be with you until the end of the age."  Paul's description of how this would come together is a literary masterpiece!  God has gifted the church with apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, all for the purpose of "equipping the saints" for works of ministry.  The Church moves forward through the effort of its members reaching out to the world with the message of hope, the message of salvation that is open to all!

His Adopted Children >

Jesus welcomed children into his arms, saying, "Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of God."  God intends for us all to be his adopted children.  The price of adoption has been paid through Jesus' precious blood. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee.  Before the foundation of the world, the plan was set in motion.  How great is our loving, merciful, generous God!

Who Are We? >

"Oh well, remember, I'm just human." You've heard these words and maybe, after making a mistake of some kind, you've even said them. But is that who you really are? Just human? If you wonder who you are, look to Christ. As Christians we're more than just human; we're children of God. Our identity is not in the first Adam, but in Christ, the second Adam. Through the Holy Spirit we have the faith of Christ. By faith we know we are a new person.

Faith in Abundance >

Though we live in trying times during a downturn in the economy we should not lose faith in God. God offers us an abundant life that cannot be measured in human terms. God will take care of his people regardless of what is going on around them.

Open Your Hearts >

The Apostle Paul's letters clearly describe God's intent and purpose for mankind.  God intends to reconcile the world unto himself through Jesus.  The Holy Spirit is using the church as his instrument in bringing it into being.  God's grace is extended to the church so it can be shared with the entire world.  Paul asks the church to "open wide your hearts" to receive God's grace, that we may receive it, and that we may pass it along to others.

Arnold Clauson - June 14, 2009

Seeds of Growth >

Jesus used the parable of the mustard seed to illustrate the Kingdom of God.  It would begin small, but finish large.  This parable also illustrates the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians.  At conversion, the seed is planted.  As the seed is nourished it produces abundantly.  Jesus made plain the work of the Holy Spirit in Christians: make disciples!

God's presence existed at the foundation of the earth.  When Pentecost came, the Holy Spirit brought God's presence to the church to continue the work Jesus had begun, the salvation of mankind.  Today, God's presence exists within the lives of Christians the world over, but for more than just preserving our lives.  God's presence in our lives through the Holy Spirit is at work, bringing the his message of salvation to the entire world.

It's Pentecost>

Pentecost was a once-in-history event, when the church was born. This day is important because Pentecost is the birthday of the Church, and God has given us the wonderful opportunity of being a part of it.

Love at the Top>

What kind of love exists at the top?  How is love of the Father and Son expressed?  Jesus, instructing the disciples, attempts to help them understand this love, and to thus express the same love to one another.  When we learn about God's love in His own realm, we begin to grasp what He wants for us in our realm.  God is love.  All He does is motivated by love.  This love is expressed through Jesus Christ to usward.  This love is what God wants us to incorporate in our day to day walk with Him.
